Decoding is important because it is the foundation on which all other reading instruction builds.
I hang a large pocket chart on a movable separator as a reading station. The pockets are filled with picture cards and a container on the floor is filled with Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words to match the pictures. The students need to read the C-V-C card and place it in front of the corresponding picture.
Reading Level Tracker
There is NOTHING that makes a teacher happier than seeing their student succeed, especially in reading. Reading is such an important life skill and therefore special effort needs to be taken in tracking each student’s level so one can see progress as well as areas of difficulty. The Reading Level Tracker below is a simple and very teacher/parent friendly way to track student’s reading level on a monthly basis. These charts are easy to read and an accurate way to track data. The tracker is based off of the Fountas-Pinnell Assessment and Developmental Reading Assessments (DRA).
